Padstow and its environs ...

Padstow

Named after St. Petroc, one of the chief saints of Cornwall, Padstow flourished as a major fishing port right up to the 1950s with the fish train leaving the quayside twice a day. But these days, although there is still a small fleet which carries on the local tradition, just as evident in the harbour are visiting yachts, speedboats and pleasure cruisers.

May Day is the most important day in the life of Padstow with its celebration of the coming of summer and the two ‘Obby ’Osses. But there are other noteworthy dates and events in the calendar including:

  • Egg Rolling Race on Easter Sunday,
  • Lifeboat Day
  • Carnival
  • Royal Cornwall Show (just outside Wadebridge)
  • Christmas Lights – the town and harbour are decked with lights
  • Christmas Festival

Surroundings


Inland along the estuary is the Camel Trail which follows the old Railway line to Wadebridge and then continues beside the River Camel to Poleys Bridge in the foothills of Bodmin Moor. And, across the spine of Cornwall is the Saints’ Way – a 28 mile walk from Padstow to Fowey.

The coast around Padstow is breathtaking with its estuary views, steep cliffs, rocky coves and footpaths across the fields. It is a haven for wildlife - wild flowers flourish in abundance, sea birds nest on the cliffs and on the shoreline there are the marine animals. Dolphins and basking sharks are frequently seen in the mouth of the estuary and along the coast seals come ashore to breed and soak up the sun.

All along the coast are wonderful bays and beaches, some within easy walking distance of Padstow and others a short car ride away.

Up at Trevose Head are the lighthouse and the RNLI life boat station. The station is open for visitors during the summer months.

And slightly further along the coast towards Newquay are Porthcothan Bay, Bedruthan Steps - one of the most picturesque views in Cornwall - Mawganporth, and Watergate Bay – one of Cornwall’s biggest surfing resorts.

Sports and activities

Rock, on the other side of the estuary, offers a wide choice of water sports. During the day the Black Tor ferry runs every 20 minutes between Padstow and Rock so it is easy to get over to Rock and take advantage of:

            • Sailing and powerboating lessons at Camel Sailing
            • Water-ski, wakeboarding, paddleboarding and kite surfing lessons as well as Banana Boat Rides at the Camel Ski School

Back on the Padstow side of the Camel estuary, and 3 miles from Padstow, you will find:

Fishing is an important aspect of life in Padstow and some of the local fisherman offer the more adventurous the opportunity of Deep Sea, Mackerel, Wreck and Reef Fishing Trips; they leave the harbour most days in high season. Padstow Sealife Safaris offer voyages along North Cornish Coast with the opportunity to see at close quarters the wildlife that live along the coastline.

  • Cornwall has many coastal links and parkland golf courses with facilities for both the novice and experienced golfer. Trevose Golf Club (4 miles from Padstow) and St Enodoc Golf Club (within walking distance of the ferry at Rock) are considered to be two of the best links courses in the West of England. Closer to home is Greens Crazy Golf and Grass Puuting just 100 meters along North Quay .

Further Afield

The National Trust are responsible for many of the historic houses around Cornwall . Not too far away from Padstow are Lanhydroch House and Trerice Manor.

Helped by the climate and soil, the Cornish have long established a reputation for their wonderful luxuriant gardens. A visit to the Lost Gardens of Heligan is a must.

A few years ago The Eden Project was a disused clay pit but now it has been regenerated into a “stunning lost world”. In the Biomes you can travel to the rain forests of South America, the olive groves of the Mediterranean and many other climes.

But there are so many places to visit and so much to do that people come back to Cornwall year after year.
