Leaving the coast, and travelling inland a mile or so down the Camel estuary, you will find Padstow offering a welcome haven to boats and visitors alike. Padstow is a largely unspoilt historic town with the harbour at its centre. It is a fascinating place with a warren of narrow streets and alleys, lined with attractive stone and slate-hung houses, radiating out from the busy harbour.

Life in Padstow could not be simpler; everything is on your door step. Within 200 metres of Ellerys, you will find:

  • Two cash machines close to the harbour
  • Tourist Information Centre (tel. 01841 533449)
  • Newspapers and stationery
  • Chemist
  • Fresh bread, milk and cream
  • Spar self service
  • The Chough who are famous for their breads, pasties, croissants, danish pastries and cakes
  • Many gift and craft shops, art galleries and boutiques selling a wide range of holiday clothing .

And slightly further afield are:

  • Fresh fish and locally caught crabs and lobsters (5 min walk away)
  • Parish Church (7 min walk)

 

On the outskirts of town, and a couple of minutes' drive away, is a smal Tesco store and 8 miles away is the market town of Wadebridge with a larger Tesco store plus Lidl, Aldi and a Co-Op.  . If you place your order on-line, Tesco will deliver your order to Ellerys.

Just outside Padstow, on the road to Crugmeer, is Padstow Farmshop where you can buy their own vegetables, salads and herbs as well as a selection of local produce, such as cream, butter, cheese and eggs. In addition, free range poultry is available with lamb, beef and pork, all reared on their farm.

If you don’t want to cook, you don’t have to, there are any number of options open to you::

  • take-aways – fish and chips, pizza, Chinese (St Merryn), Indian (Wadebridge)
  • numerous pubs serving local produce
  • pasty shops, cafes and tea shops
  • many restaurants

Rick Stein’s restaurant, bistro and café are well-known and reservations need to be made well in advance. But there are other well-recommended restaurants - offering a wide range of cuisines and covering an equally wide price range - both in Padstow and nearby villages as well as across the estuary in Rock. A water taxi operates between Padstow and Rock, so you don’t have to worry about the drive home.

    Directions to Padstow by road

    • Find a map here from Google maps as well as a road journey planner
    • From Exeter, take A30 to Bodmin (60 miles), by-passing Okehampton and Launceston
    • Leave A30 at Bodmin and take A389 to Padstow (15 miles) by-passing Wadebridge.
    • Arriving at Padstow turn right at first major road after Tesco (signed Docks).
    • Follow the road round into Riverside, turn left into South Quay, right into The Strand and you will see Ellerys ahead of you on the corner of North Quay.

    Directions to Padstow by train

    Nearest Station is Bodmin Parkway (20 miles from Padstow)

    There is a bus service (route 11) which connects with some of the trains or a taxi can be hired in advance or on arrival at the station.

     

Directions to Padstow by air

Direct daily flights are available throughout the summer from London Gatwick, Manchester, East Midlands, Aberdeen and Dublin Airports to Newquay Airport (20 minutes from Padstow). There are also a number of flights a week to Newquay from Belfast, Humberside, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, London Stanstead and Newcastle. In the winter there are fewer flights although the London Gatwick route is available throughout the year.  Deatils can be found on Newquay Airport's website or phone 01637 860 600.

Taxis can be hired in advance or on arrival at the airport.  A number of car rental companies are also available at the airport.
